Script Development
TTF helps to develop scripts through several projects. Generally speaking, playwrights are encouraged to attend an event to get a sense of the work that TTF develops. Playwrights of color are especially encouraged to get in touch with TTF.
The best points of introduction are the Monthly MUSE Program (currently on Zoom), or through the Staged Reading Series (currently on hiatus). Those who are interested may contact Joe Montoya, Literary Associate.

The Monthly MUSE Program
Facilitated by Chris Rivera, our longest running program gives developmental space to playwrights, where they can hear a 10 minute scene from a larger work acted out, and given Lerman-style feedback. Many playwrights and actors have made contact through this series. Chris is always looking for historically excluded voices to feature. Playwrights of color are especially encouraged.
While TTF's signature style is verse drama, the Monthly MUSE Program is a place to experiment with all sorts of genres and styles. Those who are writing verse will find actors who have performed new verse extensively and will be able to give excellent feedback. |
The Proteus Project
Playwrights who have worked with TTF and have completed a polished draft of their play may be offered or request a Proteus Project reading. This is a private, script-in-hand, undirected reading, with a limited audience. The purpose of the Proteus Project is to let playwrights hear their work in whole with accomplished actors. Proteus Projects conclude with Lerman-style feedback.
In general, TTF favors verse or heightened texts for Proteus Projects.

Staged Reading Series
The Staged Reading Series is an annual event, going all the way back to TTF's first season. Plays are performed, with movement, before an audience (and frequently with liquor!). This series gives the playwright a sense not only of what the actors experience through the rehearsal process, but also gives the playwright a sense of audience response without the pressure of an opening night.
Staged Reading Series scripts are chosen from among Submissions and Commissions. Keep an eye on the Turn to Flesh Facebook page for submission opportunities. Playwrights who can attend the week of rehearsals and performance are preferred. Scripts in heightened text, especially verse or in direct conversation with a well-known classic, are frequently short-listed. A small honorarium is paid to each playwright.

Workshop, Filmed, and Full Productions
Full productions of any sort (i.e., live or filmed) are commissions, almost exclusively chosen from those who have worked with TTF through any one of our development programs. Those interested in full productions are encouraged to attend a Monthly MUSE to get a sense of what we do, or to introduce their work during an open submission season.
Full productions are produced according to AEA/SAG-AFTRA guidelines for a minimum of two weeks production. Stipends are paid to all artists involved. With the 2020 pandemic, TTF is currently exploring digital platforms for production.
